As a teacher, I’ve seen hundreds of learners struggle with traditional textbooks. I felt this had to change. Learning a language should be fun, not frustrating. Integrating into a new life and country should be a feel-good story, not a 'feel-bad about my Dutch' story. The moment you can speak just a few useful sentences and connect in Dutch is such a relief—and a joy. That’s why I created a different approach: one that makes Dutch feel like a story you’re excited to tell, not a test you have to pass.
🧠 How Your Brain Really Learns a Language
Your brain is wired for language learning. Especially when you’ve done it before (when learning your native language). All you need is lots of input in the target language.
💬 R.I.C.H. Input: The Secret to Fast Progress
Your brain thrives on input that is:
Repetitive – Hearing the same words and patterns again and again helps you remember without effort. (Don’t worry, stories keep it interesting!)
Interesting – When you’re curious about what happens next, your brain pays attention and absorbs more.
Comprehensible – If you can follow the story (thanks to pictures and context), you understand and learn naturally—even if you don’t know every word.
High Frequency – You learn the sentences and words you’ll actually use in daily life, not just textbook phrases.
✂️ The Power of Manageable Chunks
Too much information at once? That’s overload! The best story-based methods (like TPRS and CI) focus on just 3–4 key sentences per lesson. We repeat them in different ways, so they stick—and you can use them right away. A manageable chunk is the language you can actually produce at the end of each lesson.
🧱 Grammar-Free, Stress-Free
Forget memorizing rules! You don’t need to “study” grammar to speak well. Your brain cannot keep up with your speaking speed to correct your ‘mistakes’ anyway. When you hear correct Dutch in context, your brain picks up the patterns automatically. A good teacher simply points out the smart shortcuts, so you can use them when needed.
🌊 The Affective Filter: Why Fun Matters
If something feels too hard, too fast, or too stressful, your brain shuts down. But when you’re relaxed and having fun with a story, you’re open to learning—and you remember more. That’s why my courses are built around engaging, easy stories that make you forget you’re even studying!
📚 Textbooks vs. Storybooks
Textbooks feel like homework. Story-based illustrated books feel like play—but you’re still learning real, useful Dutch for daily life. My students are always surprised by how much they can say after just a few chapters! With my story-based books and courses, anyone can learn Dutch—without the stress and headache.
